About us
Alice Springs Swimming Club (ASSC) aims to provide an enjoyable, safe and healthy environment to develop swimming skills either for competition or to promote a fit and active lifestyle. Our team has the right blend of discipline and encouragement for swimmers of all abilities to realise their potential, with opportunities to participate in club, state and national swim meets. We are affiliated with Swimming Northern Territory and Swimming Australia and adhere to their terms and conditions.
ASSC is a not-for-profit organization. ASSC is run by a committee of parents and friends who meet once a month to discuss logistics, liaise with coaches, technical officials & NT Swimming, plan social activities, plan fundraising activities, and keep records of all swimmers membership and fees for the season.
The fees and fundraising activities go towards cover the cost of coaching costs, pool lane hire, insurance, and NT Swimming capitation fees.
The Alice Springs Aquatic & Leisure Centre has a 25m indoor pool and a 50m outdoor pool. We utilize both and offer our swimmers short course and long course events over the season. Our four terms coincide with the school terms. We offer a modified program over summer for swimmers that want to maintain their pool fitness.

Getting involved
Committee Positions
All Committee positions are volunteer-based, Parents are encouraged and welcome to become more involved in Club activities. Please consider joining the committee and contributing to ensure the continued success of the Club.
Swim Meets
At swim meets, parents are asked to assist with timekeeping. No experience is necessary and it is guaranteed ‘best' seat in the house!
You can take your Club involvement at a swim meet to the next level and look to become a Technical Official. Technical Officials are in high demand, especially in regional areas. Becoming an official will give you a better understanding of your child's sport and provide a valuable contribution to the club and its swimmers.
If this is of interest, please have a look at the following websites and further information can be provided by Swimming NT's Technical Manager: technicalmanager@nt.swimming.org.au

CLUB HISTORY
The Alice Springs Swimming Club has achieved a lot since it was established by a group of keen parents to encourage local children to pursue their love for swimming. The club has produced swimmers who have broken Australian records, won medals at the Australian Age Championships and who have swum at Olympic and World Championship Trials and Australian Open Championships. Impressive results considering there was no heated indoor pool in Alice Springs until 2012 forcing swimmers to rely on land training during the five months when the pool was closed!
The club’s first swimmer to break an Australian record was Luke Van Haaren who in 1998 broke the 14-years 50m freestyle – the record stood for a number of years too! The club was the starting platform for a number of swimmers who moved towns to train at a year-round squad, such as Nick Donald who was just 9-years-old when he joined the club. As he progressed through the ranks, Nick broke a number of Ian Thorpe’s age records. A member of the Australian under 18 team who competed at the 2007 Junior Pan Pacific Championships, Nick won an impressive four gold medals at the meet. He also competed at the 2016 World Championship Trials and finished third in the 400m freestyle behind Grant Hackett and Craig Stephens.
